\text* does not support nesting

As per an issue reported at https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=35186 , \text* commands do not support nesting. Example: \textbf{\textit{broken}} does not print "broken" in bold-italic style but instead outputs "\textit{broken}" in bold letters.
